My Favorite Romance Tropes: Small-Town, Found Family, and More
Tropes Make a Romance Unforgettable
If you’ve been in the romance world for long, you’ve probably heard the term “tropes.” Tropes are the themes that hold the story together. They make each story feel familiar yet fresh, and they create an emotional connection between readers and characters. We all have our favorites, and today, I’ll share mine!
Small-Town Romance: Feels Like Going Home
Growing up in a small town myself, I’ve always craved the slower pace, tight-knit community, local events, and that sense of intimacy that comes with small-town life. If you’re a fan of Hallmark movies, you’ll probably agree—small towns offer the perfect backdrop for that hometown romance feel. Add in a second chance romance, the one that got away, or a hometown hero, and you’ve got yourself a swoony, feel-good love story. All of my books are small-town romances.
Friends to More: Love Founded on Friendship
There’s something magical about turning a friendship into love. The characters know each other, have shared experiences, and over time, realize they’d be perfect together. What’s not to love about falling in love with your best friend? These stories are the ultimate slow burn, and when you throw in the helping each other find "the one" dynamic, hilarity always follows. It’s the perfect mix of heart and humor! You can read this trope in my novel Wishing for the Girl Next Door.
Cinnamon Roll Heroes: Sweethearts Who Steal My Heart
A cinnamon roll hero is kind, loving, and unafraid to show affection—though he might be a little shy. But don’t let that fool you! These heroes are also protective, handy, and strong when it counts. In a world that sometimes tells men to be closed off, these cinnamon roll heroes go all in. They prioritize their loved ones, making them the kind of heroes we can’t help but fall for. If you adore this trope, you'll love Brant from His Christmas Wish.
Found Family: Creating Your Own Circle
When characters have strained relationships with their own families—or have lost them entirely—this trope steps in. The found family is a crew of people who surround the characters with love, support, and humor. It’s a bond that transcends biology, and there’s something incredibly powerful about that. Love in these stories isn’t just about romantic relationships—it’s about the people who uplift and support you when you need it the most. Gabby from A Soldier's Wish comes to mind with this trope.
Single Parent Romance: Falling in Love as a Family
Single-parent romances are my absolute jam! It’s an emotional journey to put yourself out there after having lost love, and these characters have more than just their own hearts to consider. When a child is involved, the romance deepens almost immediately. The couple must navigate falling in love with each other while also bonding with the child. And, of course, kids often bring that extra dose of comedic relief when the story gets intense or swoony. You can read this trope in His Christmas Wish, Sweet Summertime Wishes, Bean Wishing for a Latte Love, and A Brewtiful Kind of Love.
These are just a few of my favorite tropes, but there are so many more I could share! What about you? What are your go-to romance tropes? I’d love to hear your thoughts—email me at [email protected], and let’s chat about all things romance!
